KATHMANDU, JUL 25 - The Unified Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF) has said on Sunday that it can take the decision on whether or not to support the Nepali Congress (NC) for the formation of new government only after the latter comes up with its formal commitment, in writing, regarding the Madhes issues, statute-drafting, and the peace process.

The UDMF, an alliance of four Madhes-based parties, demanded written commitment from the Nepali Congress (NC) leaders, who went to meet the Madhesi leaders this morning, to seek support for the government formation.

The NC leaders held discussions with the Madhesi parties at the Terai Madhes Loktantrik Party (TMLP) Parliamentary Party office in Singhadurbar earlier today.

After the meeting, Madhesi Janadhikar Forum (MJF) Chairman Upendra Yadav informed that the UDMF can take the decision regarding the support to the NC after the latter put forth its commitment in writing.

NC leader Arjun Narsingh KC however said the discussion with the Madhesi alliance has not reached the conclusion.

“We are positive about the front's proposal,” said KC. “We will prepare the party’s view on the same and submit it to the UDMF before the third prime ministerial runoff.”

During the meeting, NC General Secretary Bimelandra Nidhi, leader KC, Shekhar Koirala and top leaders of the four Madhes-based parties associated with the UDMF were present.

Meanwhile, the Madhesi front is scheduled to hold discussion on the government formation with the Maoists later today.
