Madhesi front asks Maoists to commit in writing

KATHMANDU, JUL 25 - The Unified Democratic Madhesi Front (UDMF), which had earlier demanded a formal commitment from the Nepali Congress on the Madhesi issues, demanded the same—written commitment on their concept paper—from the UCPN (Maoist). The Maoists have said that they are positive on most of the demands.

In a meeting between the front and the Maoists held at Tarai Madhes Loktantrik Party (TMLP)'s office in Singhadurbar on Sunday, the Maoists, who have fielded their chairman for the prime minister's post, had urged the Madhesi parties for the support.

In response, the Madhesi parties requested the Maoists to make a written commitment for the implementation of their concept paper, Maoist Vice Chairman Narayankaji Shrestha informed.

The party will come up with a decision on the demand only after discussing it in the party, Shrestha said.

According to TMLP Joint Chairman Hridayesh Triparti, who was present at the meeting, the Maoists were positive on most of the points during the meeting.

Triparti said that the Maoists sought more definitions on the issues of One Madhes One Province, inclusive army and citizenship, among other points. The front will answer to that after its next meeting, Triparti said.

Also, the Madhesi leaders expressed their disapproval on the major three parties' decision to form a State Restructuring Commission, according to Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Nepal Joint Chairman JP Gupta. Gupta said the Maoists have pledged reconsideration on the commission formation.

On July 23, the UDMF—an alliance of four Madhes-based political parites—had put forth their three-part and 16-point concept paper to the NC and UCPN (Maoist) as their condition for their support in the prime ministerial election.

The front holds 82 seats at the Constituent Assembly.
