Nepal's poverty rate 25.4 percent: NPC
KATHMANDU, JUL 16 - The poverty level in Nepal is at 25.4 percent, according to the National Planning Commission (NPC).
The planning commission information it at a press conference organised in the Capital on Friday after a newspaper cited a UNDP report prepared by Oxford University saying that Nepal’s poverty stood at 65 percent.
NPC Vice Chairman Dr. Jagadish Chandra Pokharel, member Dr. Puskar Bajracharya and Director General of Central Bureau of Statistics Uttam Narayan Malla said the poverty level was determined by converting the rate of food consumption — 2,144 calorie per people per year -- during 2003-2004 into price.
The Oxford report, however, determined the poverty rate as 65 percent on the basis of nutrition, electricity, food, energy, drinking water and sanitation, maternal mortality, student enrollment, livelihood and availability of property.
