DARWIN, JUL 10 -

An Australian soldier has been killed by an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan.

Air Chief Marshal Angus Houston, the head of the Australian Defense Force, announced Saturday the 23-year-old soldier was killed just before midnight Friday.

Houston says authorities will not release his name, but his family has been informed.

A second soldier was wounded and remains in stable condition.

The soldier was the sixth Aussie to die in Afghanistan in the past month.

Australia has some 1,500 troops in Afghanistan alongside NATO forces. The death takes Australia's military death toll in Afghanistan to 17.
