KATHMANDU, JUL 08 - Major customs offices across the country remained closed on Wednesday following manhandling of Biratnagar Customs Officer Man Bahadur Poudel and his family by Chief District Officer Sashi Shekhar Shrestha on Tuesday night.

Customs offices in Biratnagar, Birgunj, Bhairahawa, Kakarbhitta, Tatopani and the Tribhuvan International Airport remained shut in protest.

Morang CDO Shrestha had taken control of Poudel and his family members at midnight on Tuesday in a manner of abduction for not speaking in his favour in the court on a case of factory raid.

Navaraj Bhandari, Director General of the Department of Customs, said a high-level team comprising joint secretaries from the ministries of finance and home affairs had reached Biratnagar to investigate into the case.

Santa Raj Subedi, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Finance, and Shankar Koirala, Joint Secretary at the Ministry of Home Affairs, have landed in Biratnagar to look into the matter. “Such an incident weakens the morale of civil servants,” said Bhandari.
