KATHMANDU, JUL 05 - The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) Nepal and the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) dispatched a joint team to Chitwan on Monday to probe threats issued by Maoist cadres to former child soldier Sita Tamang.

Sita tamang had spoken of her war experience at the UN Security Council last month.

The joint team will verify media reports that said the 18-year old was intimidated by half-a-dozen Maoist cadres from the Shaktikhor cantonment on Sunday for speaking at the UN, an official at OHCHR-Nepal told the Post on Monday.

Tamang had told the UNSC on June 16 of the hardships she faced after forceful enlistment in the Maoist Army five years ago. She was identified as Manju Gurung by the UN.

The latest development follows a cover story carried by the bi-monthly Himal magazine based on an interview with Tamang. "We will be in a position to comment on this incident only after the completion of the investigation," the OHCHR official said.
