Maoists blamed for Tiwari’s death
CDO says investigation still on
Hindu leader’s murder
PARSA, JUN 28 - The Hindu Youth Federation (HYF) on Sunday alleged that the UCPN (Maoist) was involved in the murder of HYF Central Chairman Kashi Tiwari.
Three unidentified masked men shot dead Tiwari at Ashokbatika in Birgunj, Parsa, on Saturday evening.
HYF office bearers, who submitted a memorandum to the Chief District Officer (CDO) on Sunday, accused Maoist lawmakers Prabhu Sah and Shivachandra Kushawaha of involvement in the killing. CDO Nagendra Jha, however, said investigation into the killing is on. He said a five-member investigation committee has been formed under the chairmanship of SP Gopal Prasad Bhandari. Jha said the guilty will be brought to justice soon after the investigation committee submits its report.
HYF Advisor Jyotilal Kalawar said HYF office bearers frequently received death threats from the Maoists after the HYF retaliated against the Maoists’ indefinite strike in Birgunj in May.
“Unidentified persons telephoned me six times since Tiwari’s murder and threatened to kill me also,” Kalawar told reporters here. He also claimed that Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal had publicly threatened action against the organisation. “How can we be secure when he issued such threats against the Hindu people of Birgunj while he was addressing a mass meet in the Capital?” he said.
Kalawar also said the Muslim community was not involved in the killing. He claimed that 80 percent of the total local Muslim population supports the organisation.
Lawmaker Sah told the Post that the Bhojpura State Committee in-charge of the Maoists, Bhim Gautam, would make the party’s view on the incident public.
Kushawaha told the Post that the HYF allegations were an attempt to defame the party. “The administration used force against us in Birgunj during the indefinite strike and not the HYF supporters; as such, the party does not have a policy of taking action against HYF,” Gautam said. In the memorandum, the HYF demanded the arrest of the guilty, relief to the victim’s family and declaring Tiwari a martyr. HYF took out a funeral procession in Birgunj on Sunday. Mourners chanted slogans demanding security and restoration of Nepal as a Hindu state. Tiwari’s body has been kept at Ghantaghar Chowk. The HYF said it will not cremate the body until its demands are met.
