Kalu Gurung posts bail, walks free
KATHMANDU, JUN 26 -
Kalu Gurung, who was arrested in connection with the Unity Life International (ULI) scam, was freed on Friday on bail of Rs. 90 million as demanded by Lalitpur District Court (LDC) and Revenue Investigation Department (RID). LDC ordered Gurung’s release on bail of Rs. 50 million after an investigation found that he had borrowed the money from ULI Chairman Kashi Ram Gurung and invested in land. Public prosecutors were surprised when Gurung paid Rs. 50 million in cash minutes after the court decision to release him on bail. According to Superintendent of Police, in-charge of the Metropolitan Police Range, Lalitpur, Bikram Singh Thapa, Gurung was handed over to Revenue Investigation Department for further investigation for his alleged role in tax evasion and foreign currency embezzlement.
The RID demanded bail of Rs. 40 million for Gurung’s release. This time, however, Gurung provided a bank guarantee instead of cash. The public prosecutors on Wednesday had filed two separate cases of fraud and financial crime against Gurung for his alleged involvement in the ULI scam. Gurung, who was arrested in Pokhara on Tuesday, was brought to the Capital on Wednesday morning.
