‘PM will quit after solid commitment on implementation of pact’

Minister for Information and Communications Shankar Pokahrel claimed on Tuesday that Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal did not resign due to uncertainty about the implementation of the three-point agreement between the three parties.

Minister Pokharel, who is also the government spokesperson, made it clear that the prime minister would tender his resignation at the earliest if the parties expressed commitment on the implementation of the agreement.

Speaking at a programme in the Capital today, the minister said the big three parties failed take ahead the political process due to lack of agreement on the integration of the Maoist combatants.

The integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants, who have confined in UN-monitored cantonments as per the 2006 peace deal, is the key to the conclusion of the peace process that brought the Maoists to the mainstream.

“The political conflict is deepening due to the Maoists’ illusion that they will become weak once they dissociate from the weapons and combatants, and fear on the part of the Nepali Congress and the UML that they will become feeble if the issue arms and combatants is not settled,” said the minister.

He urged the parties to focus on the peace and statute drafting by putting aside their stand.

In another context, the minister said the dissatisfaction, by various groups, at the state honour conferred on the republic day on Saturday. He said the government would hold discussion and make public its view on the same.
