TENZING HILLARY EVEREST MARATHON
Eighth edition all set to kick off
PYANGBOCHE, MAY 29 - The Tenzing-Hillary Everest Marathon which initiated on the 50th anniversary of the successful ascent of Mt. Everest by Tenzing Norgay and Sir Edmund Hillary and which has also been recorded in the Guinness book of world records as the marathon at the highest altitude in the world will kick off its eighth edition today.
Himalaya Expeditions have organised seven successful editions of this event so far and it has gained huge popularity at the national and international levels. Every year, this event is seeing a rise in the number of national as well as international participants. This year, however, there has been a decrease in the number of foreign participants. The general strike called by the UCPN (Maoist) and the fluid political situation of the country has had an adverse effect on the event. There are 104 participants in the event this year, including 31 foreigners. There were 44 foreigners last year. The first edition of the marathon had 29 participants, of which six were foreigners. Be it in the men’s or women’s category, Nepalis have dominated the marathon in the open category. The first three positions have been occupied by Nepalis in every edition. Deepak Raj Rai completed a hat-trick of wins in the event, being first in the open category in 2006, 2007 and 2008 consecutively. Winner of last year’s event was Phurba Tamang. In the foreign category, India bagged all three top positions. Poland, France, UK, the US, Japan and Spain have been vying closely.
The marathon starts from Everest Base Camp at an altitude of 5365m and ends at Namche Bazaar at an altitude of 3446m, covering a total distance of 42.195 km.
