'CA term will be extended, PM will quit later'

KATHMANDU, MAY 28 -

At the eleventh hour, the major three parties have agreed upon extending the Constituent Assembly's term by one year following an understanding that Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal would step down at opportune time later.

Following the agreement, the CA that failed to meet its deadline to promulgate the new constitution today will be extended by one year. The CA's Legislature-Parliament will amend the Interim Constiution and formally extend the CA term. Talking to the media at the CA premises, Nepali Congress Spokesperson Arjun Narsingh KC said that the parties agreed to extend the CA term by one year, and accomplish all unfinished works mentioned in the peace agreement through a package deal.

According to him, the parties have agreed upon all contentious issues including formation of national unity government, power sharing,  management of the Maoist combatants and weapons, disbandment of the paramilitary structure of the Maoist's Young Communist League and return of the private property seized by the Maoists. 

UML lawmaker Ramnath Dhakal informed that leaders of the UCPN (Maoist), CPN-UML and Nepali Congress are working out to draft the agreement.

The prime minister is expected to address the House before 12 p.m.

Earlier, Senior UML leader KP Oli who reached the CA premises to take part in the party's Standing Committee meeting also expressed hope that the CA term would be be extended.

Meanwhile, the prime minister has reached the CA after holding meeting with his cabinet ministers at Singhadurbar.

  Earlier, he held consultations with President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav also.
