NIJGADH, MAY 27 - Ineffective monitoring at the Nepal-India border at Bara has given rise to smuggling leading to a decline in revenue collection.
Chief of the Central Revenue Investigation Unit, Pathlaiya, Rajan Khadka, said, "Negligence by the Nepal Police and the Customs Office is responsible for the growth in illegal imports. Records of the Revenue Investigation Unit, Pathlaiya show that two sealed trucks were seized in October November 2009 which were carrying contraband worth more than Rs. 500,000 brought through Birgunj port.
Khadka said that revenue amounting to Rs. 22.3 million had been collected as of mid-May of the current fiscal year against the target of Rs. 31 million.
"Money collected as penalty for evading tax and through auctions of contraband seized between the Kamala River in the east and the Narayani River in the west amounts to more than Rs. 30 million." Kitchen utensils, clothes, electronic goods, and urea fertilizer were confiscated.
