Extortion terror grips Tulsipur traders
DANG , MAY 14 - Business community in Tulsipur, the district headquarters of Dang, is being targeted by extortionists recently.
The outfits seeking monetary contribution -- Ajingar and Tiger -- were unheard of by the locals before. Businessmen here are also troubled by the cadres of Matrika Yadav-led CPN (Maoist) and CPN (Marxist-Leninist-Maoist).
Dipendra Kumar Khatri, chairman of Tulsipur Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCI), said a man from the Ajingar group has been demanding with him Rs 1 million over phone. "Every time he calls, he uses a new number," Khatri added. The caller has accused Khatri of helping the local administration to free two Pawannagar-based businessmen, who were abducted by a criminal gang two years ago.
"There are other groups extorting the businesspersons too," Khatri said, adding that some private schools had also received calls and letters for contributing to the outfits. Extortion has increased significantly in the last one month. An improvised explosive device, reportedly planted by the CPN (MLM) outside a hotel here on Tuesday, has created terror in the business community.
"We have no security," said Khagendra Prasad Pokharel, vice chairman of the CCI.
Superintendent of Police Raj Bahadur Bista sought the cooperation of the local business community to arrest the culprits. "Since many victims choose to negotiate the amount and pay the extortionist, instead of informing the police, these criminals are going about scot-free," Bista said. "This has encouraged them to commit the same crime over again."
