SIRAHA, MAY 13 - Entrepreneurs and people of Siraha have been deprived of banking services as the banks shut down during the Maoist conflict have not been reopened.

People of Bhagwanpur, Inarwa and Nahara Regaul have been facing hardships after the Thadi branch of Nepal Bank Limited was closed during the decade-long conflict. The Thadi branch was merged with the Lahan branch due to security risks.

Likewise, displacement of the Sukhipur branch of Rastriya Banijya Bank has prevented people of various village development committees (VDCs) including Mohanpur, Kamalpur, Kus-aha, Laxminia, Vidyanagar, Tulsipur, Kabilasi, Balhi, Sukhipur, Fulkahakatti, Silorwa, Pachwari, Jijhaul, Janakinagar and Harkatti from getting access to convenient banking services.

The Sukhipur branch was merged with the Lahan branch during the conflict and now it has been merged into the regional office at Rajbiraj.

Thadi is considered to be the main transit point in the region, and lack banking institutions has hampered development. A local businessman Sanjay Kumar Shah complained that they had to travel 18 km to Lahan for banking transactions.

Local residents have pleaded for immediate reopening of the branch office as they have to make a long and unsafe journey to Lahan. The Thadi branch of Nepal Bank used to conduct daily transactions of more than Rs. 3 million, said the bank.

Entrepreneurs in Sukhipur said their pleas for restoration of the bank branch had been ignored although they had sent memorandums to President Ram Baran Yadav, Vice President Parma Nanda Jha, successive finance ministers of the last two years, political parties and regional and central offices of Rastriya Banijya Bank. The Rastriya Banijya Bank branch in Sukhipur used to do transactions of more than Rs. 2 million daily. People of Sukhipur have to travel 22 km to Lahan for their banking needs.

Raasish Sah, a local businessman, said their time was being wasted in travelling to Lahan for banking transactions. "Sometimes, we have to assign many employees for banking transactions."
