Govt committed to protect press freedom: PM
KATHMANDU, MAY 10 -
Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal Monday said the government is committed to protect press freedom.
During a meeting with a delegation of National Photo Journalists’ Forum at his office in Singha Durbar, Nepal said, “It is the responsibility of every democratic government to create an environment conductive for the development of independent and professional press. The government will leave no stone unturned to maintain discipline and respect to the press.”

The photo journalists reached the PM’s office to draw his attention to Maoist attack on photo journalists during the picketing of Singha Durbar by the UCPN Maoist on Sunday.
The prime minister urged the press not to cross the disciplinary boundaries. He also urged the parties not to excite their cadres to attack the press to fulfill their short-term personal and partisan interests.
On the occasion, the prime minister informed that preparations have begun to set up a separate media room at his office.
Photo journalists Praveen Maharjan and cameraman of Avenues Television Rabindra Shrestha had sustained serious injuries in the Maoist attack at Maitighar Sunday. Their cameras were also vandalised.
The team led the forum’s chairman Min Bajracharya sought provision of insurance for the life and equipment of photo journalists, initiative to control attacks on press and provision of action against the persons involved in such attacks.
