KATHMANDU , MAY 09 -

Home Ministry has rebuffed the UPCN (Maoist) allegations that the employers of National Investigation Department who were on regular duty at Maitighar pelted stones at Maoist demonstrators. The ministry labeled the accusations as baseless and lies.

The ministry said investigation officer Ram Kumar Mahat and informant Ram Chandra Gharti have not committed any action as alleged by the Maoists. It said it is normal for the ministry to deploy its staff for public security and the spreading of propaganda by the Maoists calling the officials on duty as vigilantes is very sad.

The ministry said the Maoists resorted to vandalism after security men tried to protect a commoner who was being thrashed by the Maoists at Maitighar. It said the Maoists pelted stones and rained lathis on policemen and vandalised four vehicles. According to the ministry, five policemen including a DSP and 11 demonstrators were injured in the ensuing clash.

The ministry said the police were compelled to use tear gas shells and lathi-charge after the Maoist demonstrators thrashed camera person of Avenues TV Rabindra Shrestha.

The ministry said it was the Maoists who provoked the situation and they also vandalised a nearby restaurant. The ministry appealed to all not to level baseless charges against and manhandle anybody walking at public places while heading to their duties.
