KATHMANDU, MAY 08 -

Nepali Congress (NC) on Saturday expressed its gratitude towards organisers of peace rally saying the nationwide rally was able to put moral pressure on the UCPN (Maoist) to postpone general strike.

In a press statement issued by NC Acting President Sushil Koirala today, the party has also thanked people for their ‘unprecedented participation’ in the peace rally organised amid various obstruction.

Earlier yesterday, entrepreneurs and professionals had staged a massive peace rally in the capital demanding political parties to resolve the deadlock and Maoists to withdraw protests.

The Maoists, though they called off their general strike, has claimed that they took the decision out of their free will and not out of pressure.

The NC will not agree to the activities that would cast shadow on achievements of Peoples' Movement, underestimate democratic norms and values, and weaken the process and procedure determined by the Interim Constitution, read the statement.

The NC has also noted that the party has been moving ahead with firm determination to carve out solution through dialogue based on consensus, cooperation and unity to complete the tasks of peace process and statute drafting.
