KATHMANDU, MAY 08 -

With the withdrawal of the indefinite general strike called by the UCPN (Maoist) on Friday, normalcy has returned to Kathmandu Valley as elsewhere.

The weeklong strike had thrown life out of gear with marketplaces, offices, and academic institutions shut and vehicles remaining off the roads.

"I opened my shop after six days. I am relieved that the strike is off," said Sanjay Karki, prop rioter of Front Street Shoes Shop at New Road. "It was very hard to manage the essential goods during the strike."

He urged all the parties and the government to find solutions to the political problems through talks.

No less difficult was life for Som Lama, a three-wheeler driver.

"We are daily wage earners and are paid as per the work," said Lama. "I couldn't earn a single rupee during those six days."

"I bought food on credit, which requires at least a week to pay back," added Lama.

Manoj Bhandari, a customer at Naya Baneshwor, also bemoans such protests.

"If political parties and their supporters had invested their energy for creative works instead of street protests, our country would have prospered a lot," said Bhandari. He recalled," The week was a very difficult period to live with."

Chabi Lal K.C., accountant of Tip Top Fast Food, said the strike incurred a loss of thousands of rupees. "I wish there were no such movements," said K.C.
