KATHMANDU, MAY 08 -

Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal on Saturday welcomed the UCPN (Maoist)’s decision to postpone the general strike and expressed his confidence that it will pave the way to consensus, dialogue and cooperation.

Issuing a press statement today, the prime minister noted that it is impossible to conclude the peace process and constitution drafting without consensus and cooperation among the political parties. For that, he said, there is no alternative to forging agreement  by giving up  rigidity.

All must learn from the display of eagerness and courage by the people against the hardships that they underwent, Nepal said.

”Intolerant activities will lead us towards differences and incooperation instead of consensus,” the statement read, “I, therefore, urge the Maoists to move towards seeking solutions to the problems of inter-party differences by complying with the constitutional norms and the basic democratic values.”

The prime minister expressed his confidence that political parties will be able to create an environment of consensus by concluding different tasks related with the peace process including completion of peace process, and guarantee of  favourable situation for  constitution, transformation of the Maoists into a civilian party, disbandment of the paramilitary structure of Maoist youth wing Young Communist League and return of the seized property.

PM Nepal also thanked security personnel, civil society, and press, among others, for their efforts for peace and constitution.
