No govt change from streets: NC
KATHMANDU, MAY 07 -
At a time when the nation is reeling under the grip of indefinite general strike imposed by the main opposition UCPN (Maoist), one of the major coalition allies Nepali Congress (NC) said on Friday that the Maoists' drive to bring down the government from the streets cannot substantiate.
In a press conference organised by the NC at party acting President Sushil Koirala's residence in Maharajgunj today, the NC urged the Maoists to withdraw their general strike unconditionally.
"We cannot agree on the change of guard in government bowing to the pressure from street demonstrations as it will establish a wrong precedent," NC leader Krishna Sitaula said. "We will never agree on the Maoist demand to topple the government from streets," said he, who played a key role in bringing the former rebel Maoists to the peace process. "The NC will never compromise on Interim Constitution, democratic norms and values and achievements of People's Movement."
He also urged the Maoists to find the solution to the problem from the House.
Also, the NC has clarified that Maoist-led nation government can be formed given the Maoists make commitments to abide by the past pacts.
"If the Maoists become ready to integrate and rehabilitate their combatants, discussions on government can be made," NC General Secretary Bimalendra Nidhi said.
During the press conference, Nidhi charged that the Maoists have been irresponsible on the army integration process and other issues including disbanding paramilitary structure of Young Communist League, return of the private properties they seized and transformation into a civil party by detaching themselves from their military outfit.
