Maoists attack participants of peace rally

KATHMANDU, MAY 07 -

The Capital became tense with the outbreak of clashes at several places on Friday, the sixth consecutive day of the Maoist-enforced indefinite shutdown.

The Maoists attacked the participants of peace rally organised by various professionals in different places of the Capital. Police lobbed around half a dozen of tear gas shells to contain the situation after the Maoists and the peace rally participants clashed at the Exhibition Road.

Following the police intervention, the agitating mob dispersed.

The peace rally marched through the Capital streets after concluding a corner meeting at Basantapur in Kathmandu.

Maoist cadres obstructed a peace rally in Kupandol that was heading to take part in the peace assembly in Basantapur. Police had to intervene to calm down the situation. An unknown number of Maoist cadres including lawmaker Prem Babahadur Pulami were injured in the clash.

In another incident, a clash broke out between the peace rally participants and Maoists at Ratnapark. Police fired few tear gas shells to bring the situation under control after the clash turned violent.

Maoist has claimed that the clash ensued after the peace rally participants led by the UML youth wing Youth Force (YF) cadres pelted stones at the Maoists.

In Bagbazaar, baton-wielding Maoist cadres have been roaming in search of YF cadres.

Likewise, tension erupted in Patan after the participants of the peace assembly organised at Krishna Temple pelted stones at the vehicle being used by the Maoists.

Various professionals including entrepreneurs and employees organised the peace rally to put pressure on the government and the political parties for peace and statute.

Some 48 associations including Federation of Nepalese Chamber of Commerce and Industries (FNCCI), Nepal Chamber of Commerce, Professional’s Alliance for Peace and Democracy (PAPAD) and Hotel Association of Nepal (HAN), among others, are jointly organising the peace assembly.
