KATHMANDU, MAY 06 -

While tens of thousands of UCPN (Maoist) supporters sang, danced, and participated in building human chains along the road, a group of Maoist supporters was busy to prank the young girls walking across the Maoist’s shelter in Marigold English Secondary School at Balkot.

“I go to help my mother who sells vegetable at Minbhawan. However, it is a kind of torture to listen unnecessary remarks pointed at me,” said Parvati Ranabhat, a 17 years girl of Sirutar.

Jamuna Karki, also had the same problem when she walked on the road. She said,

“The Maoist cadres comment targeting at me while I walk across their shelter. I am scared to counter them. Therefore, I have to bear it.”

The Maoist side expressed their indifference to the case but accepted its chances.

According to Balram Silwal, an YCL activist sheltering at the school, a group of three to five cadres among 500 always stays at the shelter for management purpose during protest also. He said, “There is the possibility of such case since nobody is here to observe their activities at day time.”

However, the accused Maoist side expressed their commitment to observe the act of teasing girls by other cadres in the camp. They also assured to punish the guilty. Dilip Shrestha, an YCL activist of Balkot said, “We will surely take action if we find any body involved in teasing girls walking on the road.”

The commitment to punish is a good aspect but the girls are not satisfied as Sunita Shrestha said, “The orthodox society doesn’t seems to change its mentality though a provision to guarantee the representation of woman is in process in the new constitution.”
