DISTRICT ROUND-UP: clashes in several places; curfew in Humla, Birgunj, Dhankuta
KATHMANDU, MAY 06 -
As the general strike called by the UCPN (Maoists) continues to cripple the normal life across the nation, voices against the banda seems to have gone louder with the increasing reports of confrontations between the locals and the Maoists on Thursday, the fifth straight day of the indefinite strike.
According to our Lamjung-based correspondent Premkumari Ghale, locals at Lamjung took to retaliation against the Maoist-enforced banda today during which at least seven persons including three Maoist activists got hurt.
The clash erupted after the infuriated locals pelted stones at Maoist demonstration in the district.
Maoist cadres Krishna Bahadaur Thapa, Kalu Tamang and Hariram Makarati, Police recruit Bishnu Prasad Shrestha, locals Ishwori Prasad Ghimire, Khusijung Gurung and Jit Bahadur Adhikari sustained injuries during the incident.
Of the injured, the Maoists and Adhikari are undergoing treatment at Lamjung District Community Hospital in Besisahar, while others have returned after receiving minor treatment.
Tension flared up after the locals pelted stones during the demonstration of Maoists at Narayansthanchowk in the district.
Hundreds of locals rallied across the area before converging into a corner assembly at Sherabazzar to protest the Maoist-imposed general strike. Local businessmen, mother society, youth club members, civil society, among others, were present at the assembly.
Tanahun youths stand up against Maoists
Likewise, in Tanahun, some 300 local youths of Bhadgaun, Byas-1 in the district have stood against the general strike saying that the Maoists harried the people in the name of agitation.
The youths had also urged the local businessmen, teachers, students, labourers to retaliate against the Maoists’ ‘forceful’ general strike.
Half of the market place remained open after the youths rallied the area urging the people to defy banda.
Meanwhile, security has been beefed up in the area to avert possible confrontations.
Maoist and locals clash in Parbat, 19 injured
At least 19 people of both sides have sustained injuries in the incident. Among the injured Yam Bahadur BK, Chadra Kc, Ram bahadur Kunwar, Bimal BK and Rajesh Khamcha are said to be in critical situation. All the injured are undergoing treatment at district hospital.

Locals took to retaliation over the Wednesday night’s incident where Maoist cadres had barged into the house of Tarun Dal Shivalaya Chairman Bishnu Pokharel and assaulted him.
The locals have vandalised Maoist Party office and various hotels and shops belonging to persons affiliated to the Maoist.
Armed Police Force and Nepal Police have beefed up security in the area to avert possible confrontation.
Meanwhile, Maoist cadres assaulted a police personal, Kajiman Shrestha, with a sword after the latter tried to take the Maoist demonstrators under control.
According to police, seven Maoist activists have been detained for possessing weapons.
DAO impose curfew in Birgunj
Earlier today, supporters of the Hindu Youth Association, a pro-Hindu group, and the Maoist cadres clashed following a dispute over opening the local market.
The pro-Hindu group were holding demonstrations calling to open the local market at Ghadiarba that remained shut for the past five days.

Dozens of tear gas shells were fired during the course of demonstration after it took a nasty turn.
Five persons each from both the sides were injured in the clash.
A large number of riot police have been deployed in the area.
Earlier, Maoist cadres vandalised two shops for defying the general strike.
Curfew in Humla
Simikot wore a tense look after the activist of three major parties—the Maoist, the UML and the Nepali Congress—clashed at different places since Wednesday.
Meanwhile, locals took hold of two Maoist cadres with Khukuri and later handed them over to police.
Indefinite curfew in Dhankuta
Also, the District Administration Office (DAO) Dhankuta imposed an indefinite curfew order in Dhankuta district headquarters effective from 7:30 PM Thursday after cadres of the UML youth wing Youth Force (YF) clashed with the Maoists.

The administration was forced to clamp curfew to calm down the situation after the Maoists and YF cadres bearing home made weapons began to converge at several places in the district.
Bussinessmen, Maoists clash in Saptari; dozen hurt
Businessmen of Saptari district headquarters of Rajbiraj defied the indefinite strike imposed by the UCPN (Maoist) on Thursday.
The rally of the businesspersons who were giving an effort to open the closed shops of the city clashed with the Maoist activists who were imposing shutdown at Janaandolanchowk this afternoon.
At least a dozen Maoist cadres including Maoists’ Mithila State Committee Advisor Dukhi Ram, Narayan Das and Ram Avatar Yadav sustained injuries during the incident.
The businessmen also handed a memorandum to Chief District Officer (CDO) demanding security to open their stores from 4p.m. as per their decision. Likewise CDO Ram Prasad Adhikari assured the business community of providing security if they were ready to open shops.
Anti-strike rally in POKHARA
In Pokhara, locals staged anti-strike rally from different parts of the Valley demanding the general strike be lifted at the earliest.
Scores of locals rallied the streets of Lakeside, Amarsinghchowk, Rambazaar and Srijanachowk demanding the Maoists to roll back the general strike.
The youths have also warned of retaliation if the Maoists do not pull back the general strike.
