Capital tense as Maoists, locals clash in several places (with photo)
KATHMANDU, MAY 06 - Tension escalated in several places of the capital after the local youth leaders of the ruling parties took to demonstrations against the Maoists on Thursday, the fifth straight day of the Maoists’ indefinite general strike. At least half a dozen people have been injured as the two sides confronted each other during the course of demonstrations.

The anti-strike locals resorted to protest in places including Budanikhanta, Jorpati, Kapan and Basundhara, saying that the Maoists forcefully imposed the banda that brought the nation to a grinding halt.

Police are having tough time to avert the clash as the two sides have been engaged in sporadic skirmishes in Budanilkantha.
Police lobbed five rounds of tear gas shells after tension ran high between the locals and the Maoist cadres in Budanilkantha. A child has been injured when the two sides pelted stones. The security personnel have been trying to take the situation under control.

A huge number of red-flag bearing Maoists have reached Budanilkhanta while the anti-Maoist locals have left the area, according to our correspondent Pratima Banskonta.
Meanwhile, the Maoists have claimed that the UML youth wing Youth Force cadres have taken hostage to 30 of their cadres. The agitators have been carrying out rampant raids at local houses in the area.

Likewise, in another separate incident in Basundhara, four people sustained injuries in the clash between the locals and the Maoists. Two Maoist demonstrators—Dhanbahadur Shrestha and Chandrabahadur Karki—and the retaliators Dharmalal Shrestha and Karnaraj who were injured in the clash have been undergoing treatment at Teaching Hospital and local hospitals respectively.
Maoist has sent additional cadres as reinforcement in the area where retaliation occurred.
