KATHMANDU, APR 30 - The National Security Council on Friday decided to keep all security agencies on high alert taking into account the possibility of violence during Maoist showdown on May Day and indefinite strike strike from May 2.

The Council has decided to hand over the responsibility of security of sensitive and important facilities including airports and power houses to the Nepal Army.

Talking to reporters after the Council meeting this afternoon, Defence Minister Bidhya Bhandari said the meeting has not decided to mobilise Nepal Army (NA). “But the Army could be deployed if the Maoist protest turns violent,” said the defence minister.

Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal convened the meeting of National Security Council in Singhadurbar ahead of the Maoists' mass movement scheduled for May Day and the indefinite nationwide strike starting May 2.

Demanding resignation of Prime Minister Nepal and formation of a national unity government in their leadership, the Maoists have imposed a nationwide general strike from May 2 following a massive mass rally in all the major cities including the Capital tomorrow.
