BIRATNAGAR, APR 26 -

Defence Minister Bidhya Bhandari has said that the government could take up all possible measures to stop the Maoists if the latter tries to move ahead with its strategy to capture state power.

The defence minister's statement comes on the heels of Maoists' announcement to enforce indefinite general strike apparently in a bid to topple the government.

Bhandari accused the Maoists of working on to turn the nation into a failed state as things did not move their way. If the Maoists continue with their unruly activities, government cannot remain a mute-spectator, the defence minister warned.

She also said the government will adopt any measures for the protection of people and constitution if the Maoists' agitation turns violent.

Talking to reporters at Biratnagar today, Minister Bhandari said that the prime minister only directed the army to stay alert.

She added that the Maoists have taken the wrong path and they should come to the right one within few days.

While noting that even if the new constitution is not promulgated by May 28, the nation will not be without a constitution, the defence minister said the nation can move forward by making some amendments in the interim constitution. She added, statute-drafting is the task of Constituent Assembly and not of government.

Minister Bhandari, however, claimed that the government can draft the constitution if the political parties hand over the responsibility to it.
