Scrap MRP contract: Lawmakers to govt
KATHMANDU, APR 07 - The lawmakers on Wednesday accused the government of defying the Parliament’s supremacy while awarding the contract of Machine Readable Passport (MRP) to an Indian government undertaking.
Speaking at the Zero Hour of House session today, lawmakers of the main opposition UCPN (Maoist) and ruling CPN-ML objected to the government decision saying it posed a serious threat to national security.
They urged the government to scrap the withdraw the decision saying it has dishonoured the Parliament and remains at odds with the March 12 directives of Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
"By defying the directives of the committee the government has meddled in the jurisdiction of the Parliament," CPN-ML lawmaker Yadubansha Jha Maithil Bahun said.
Dubbing the government as a puppet, Maoist lawmaker Bhim Prasad Gautam said the decision should be scrapped at the earliest as it posed national security threat. "Diplomatic and political reasons cited by the prime minister while awarding MRP contract to India is objectionable," he said.
Also, they drew the government’s attention towards deteriorating law and order situation in the country.
Some lawmakers asked the government to curb the excesses of the Maoist youth wing Young Communist League (YCL).
CPN-UML legislator Rabindra Adhikari remarked that the constitutional crisis was imminent and stressed on the need for unity among major parties for the success of constitution drafting and peace process.
Meanwhile, the meeting forwarded the Bill against the Sexual Harassment in Work Place to the Bill Committee of the Parliament.
The next session is scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
