KATHMANDU, APR 02 -

The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday issued an interim order directing to resume services at the Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH).

After conducting the hearing today, the SC directed the defendants—agitating TUTH doctors, Home Ministry, and Kathmandu District Administration—to comply with the apex order. The order was issued as per the Essential Services Act.

Earlier, the SC had issued a show cause order to the government, Dean of the Institute of Medicine (IoM) and others over the closure of TUTH following the preliminary hearing on the writ petition filed by Consumer Rights Protection Forum (CRPF).

In its writ filed on Sunday, CRPF had named Kathmandu District Administration Office as the main defendant, and the prime minister and chancellor of Tribhuvan University (TU), the Office of the Council of Ministers, Home Ministry, Health Ministry, Education Ministry and nine doctors, including the IoM dean and assistant dean, TUTH director and agitating doctors as other defendants.

The SC had asked all government bodies identified as defendants to show up for the hearing today with written clarifications on their failure to address the TUTH row.

On March 25, CRPF had filed a complaint at the Chief District Office (CDO) demanding intervention for the resumption of essential health services.

TUCH services were brought to a standstill since March 15 after the hospital decided to stop admitting patients due to strike over alleged irregularities in the entrance exam for admission in postgraduate studies in medicine.
