TUTH docs agree to resume services from Thursday

KATHMANDU, MAR 31 - The Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH) that remained closed for over two weeks will resume its services from Thursday, as the agitating doctors called off their strike.

The agitating resident doctors and medical students decided to return to their work from Thursday following an agreement to form a probe panel led by former Education Secretary to look into the alleged irregularities in the entrance examinations for admission in postgraduate studies of medicine.

The probe panel has been asked to submit its report within 15 days.

They resorted to indefinite closure of the hospital since March 15, accusing that Institute of Medicine (IoM) Dean Dr. Arun Sayami leaked entrance exam questions by accepting a huge cash in bribe.

They were demanding that the TUTH management conduct a fair investigation into the alleged irregularities in the entrance tests and suspend the officials involved in the misconduct.

Hundreds of patients were forced to bear the brunt of the strike in the largest government-owned hospital in the country.

Earlier today, locals of Maharajgunj clashed with the agitating resident doctors during the talks held to settle the deadlock in the hospital. The meeting was held among TUTH Management Committee, agitating doctors and the locals.

The agitating doctors accused the TUTH Dean of spurring the locals to attack them.

Various round of talks between the management committee and the doctors had ended inconclusively.
