KATHMANDU, MAR 29 -

The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday issued a show cause order to the government, Dean of the Institute of Medicine (IoM) and others over the shutdown of medical services in Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital (TUTH). The single bench of Chief Justice Ram Prasad Shrestha decided to this effect after preliminary hearing on the writ petition filed by Consumers' Rights Protection Forum (CRPF).

In its writ filed on Sunday, the CRPF had identified Kathmandu District Administration Office as the main defendant, and the Prime Minister who is also ex officio Chancellor of Tribhuvan University (TU), the Office of the Council of Ministers, Home Ministry, Health Ministry, Education Ministry and nine doctors, including IoM Dean Prof. Dr. Arun Sayami and Assistant Dean Dr. Ratindra Nath Shrestha, TUTH director and agitating doctors as other defendants.

The SC also ordered all the government bodies identified as defendants to show up for the next hearing on April 2 with written clarifications on their failure to address the TUTH row.

On March 25, CRPF had filed a complaint at the Chief District Office (CDO) demanding intervention to resumption of essential health services.

Services have been affected since March 15 after the hospital decided to stop admitting patients due to strike over alleged graft in the post graduate entrance exams.
