World TB Day observed
KATHMANDU, MAR 24 -
The 2010 World TB Day was observed across the country, organising various programmes on Wednesday to raise awareness about the global epidemic of tuberculosis (TB) and efforts to eliminate the disease.
According to World Health Organisation, one-third of the world’s population is currently infected with the disease. About 1.6 million people die, mostly in the third world, each year because of tuberculosis.
At present there are 80,000 to 90,000 TB patients in Nepal. According to the Pokhara Regional Tuberculosis Centre, 5,000 to 7,000 people die of the disease in the country every year.
Nepal government supports the free diagnosis services and treatment of TB to combat the disease.
The Day is marked on March 24 to commemorate the detection of TB bacillus (Mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of tuberculosis in 1882 by Dr. Robert Koch.
TB is an airborne infectious disease that is preventable and curable. So, WHO plans to cut TB prevalence rates and deaths by half by 2015 through its Stop TB Strategy and supporting the Global Plan to Stop TB.
Nepal has also joined hands with WHO to fight the dreaded disease.
