KATHMANDU, MAR 22 -

Rubbishing the allegations that the Nepal Army (NA) personnel made arrests, raped and killed three women at Banspani area inside the Bardiya National Park (BNP), the NA on Monday made public its field report on the incident saying that the poachers were killed in retaliation.

Three women—Devisara B.K., Amrita B.K. and Chandrakala B.K,12,—of Hariharpur-2, Surkhet district were shot dead by a NA patrol team March 10.

Earlier, the Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC) Mid-Western Regional Office and Advocacy Forum in their joint report had pointed their finger at the NA soldiers charging them of making arrests before killing the women.

In a statement issued today by the NA Directorate of Public Relations, the NA report stated that a NA patrol team deployed at BNP opened fire at the poachers in retaliation after the latter opened shots instead while they were warned not to run away.  It said the poachers were stationed at the restricted zone inside the conservation area by setting up tents.

After the firing, screams of women were heard and the army stopped their fire and started searching when they found two women dead, the report said.

Likwise, according to the report, three home-made rifles, its bullets, ropes, khukuri, axes, among other necessary equipments were recovered from the incident site.
