Girija Prasad Koirala cremated with full state honours
KATHMANDU, MAR 21 -

Former Prime Minister and Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala was cremated at Pashupati Aryaghat in Kathmandu on Sunday evening with full state honours.
Deputy Prime Minister Sujata Koirala lit the funeral pyre of her father at around 7:50 p.m to consign his mortal remains to flames as per Hindu tradition. Sujata is the only daughter of late Koirala.
A team of Nepal Army offered a guard of honour along, playing national anthem and giving 21-canon salute to the late leader.
Tens of thousands of people including his kith and kin, supporters, party members, and political figures attended the funeral ceremony on the bank of Bagmati River after a funeral cortege in which an ocean of mourners participated.
Earlier today, Koirala's body was kept at the Dasharath Stadium till 3 p.m. An ocean of people followed Koirala to his funeral pyre from the Stadium, where his body was kept for seven hours for the public to pay their last respects to the late leader.
Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal, Deputy Prime Minister Bijay Kumar Gachhadar, Constituent Assembly Chairman Subash Chandra Nemwang, UCPN (Maoist) Chairman Puspha Kamal Dahal, Vice Chairman of Maoist Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, CPN-UML President Jhalnath Khanal, former Prime Minister Surya Bahadur Thapa were the among the dignitaries present.
Leader of Communist Party of India (Marxist) Sitaram Yechuri, Former President of Bharatiya Janata Party Rajnath Singh, and among other Indian leaders, who arrived in Kathmandu today afternoon, also paid their last tributes to late Koirala at Aryaghat.
A special funeral pyre was prepared at the altar no.1 in Arayghat using sandalwood and wood. In yesteryears, only the royalties were allowed to use it.
