Rupak wins Surya Nepal Central Open

KATHMANDU, MAR 20 -

Rupak Acharya finished nine-stroke ahead of Deepak Neupane on the final day to lift the Surya Nepal Central Open, at the Gokarna Golf Club on Friday.

The top amateur of the country Rupak carded one-over 73 in the final round at the home course for a total of four-under 284. Neupane who came second shot five-over 77 on the final day. 

Rupak had a lead of five strokes going into the final round and he was never threatened by the pros, who at times struggled to maintain their respective positions. While Rupak and Neupane took a turn at one-over 37, Rabi slipped further back after he shot two-over 38. On the back nine, Rupak emerged triumphant as Deepak shot four-over 40 and Rabi fired three-over 39.

Rupak, is the second amateur player to win the main trophy. Shiva Ram Shrestha, now a pro was the first.  The trophy is fifth for Rupak in the six events held under the Surya Nepal Tour 2009-10 and 11th overall. Despite finishing first Rupak did not receive a cash prize as he had participated as an amateur. Neupane bagged the top prize of Rs 72,000.

RNGC pro Rabi Khadka was overall third and second among the pros with the scores of 295 after the final round score of 77. He earned Rs 46,000. Sanjay Lama, who carded one-over 73 in the final round, took home the third-place prize money of 36,000 with the total score of 10-over 298.

Deepak Thapa Magar was fourth at 300 earning Rs 30,000, while Rajan Thapa received Rs 24,000 after he came fifth. Dhana Thapa and Ram Thapa were tied for the sixth position, where as Mani Rai, CB Bhandari and Deepak Acharya finished in the top 10. Of the total cash prize of Rs 350,000, the top 19 pros also got their share of prize. Rupak also earned the amateur trophy, ahead of Samundra Giri (301) and Ramesh Adhikari (318).

A total of 23 pros and 12 amateurs had participated in the four-day event organised by Nepal Professional Golfers Association under the sponsorship of Surya Nepal Pvt Ltd.
