Govt to offer full state honour to late Koirala
KATHMANDU, MAR 20 -
The emergency Cabinet meeting held on Saturday following the demise of Nepali Congress (NC) Girija Prasad Koirala decided to give state honour to late Koirala in his capacity as the former executive head of state.
According to Minister for Culture Minendra Rijal, the cabinet has decided to fly the national flag half-mast for three days and announce Sunday as national holiday to mourn Koirala’s death.
Likewise, the meeting has also decided to keep mourn book at Nepal-based diplomatic offices to express condolence to late Koirala for two days.
Koirala passed away at the residence of his only daughter Sujata Koirala, who is also deputy prime minister and minister for foreign affairs, in Mandikatar, Kathmandu at 12:10 a.m. on Saturday.
Koirala is credited with playing a crucial role in Nepal's peace process that brought the former rebel party UCPN (Maoist) to the mainstream politics, thereby bringing an end to the decade long armed insurgency during which over 13,000 people lost their lives and thousands other displaced.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal has arrived at Mandikatar, where Koirala's mortal remains has been kept, to offer his tribute to Koirala.
