With love from the US
KATHMANDU, MAR 19 - Former Nepali national taekwondo players living in the US paid tribute to six taekwondo medal winners of the 11th South Asian Games on Thursday.
The formers players — Yam Bahadur Pun, Bidan Lama, Narayan Gurung, Seema Dhami, Padma Gurung, Bina Rai, Kumar Bahadur Karki, Sabita Raj Bhandari, Kishor Shrestha, Koshish Khadka, Kamal Bahadur Chettri, Bandana Shrestha, Jagan Lal Shrestha and Basanta Pandey — had sent cash to Nepal Taekwondo Association to be distributed among the players on their behalf.
Among the six, gold medal winners, Deepak Bista and Ayesha Shakya were awarded Rs. 50,000 each, while the silver medallists Manita Shahi and Kumar Manandhar got Rs. 25,000 each. Yam Kumar Chaulagain, and Dan Bahadur Aire, the bronze winners, bagged Rs. 15,000 each. Korean taekwondo coach also received Rs. 5,000. All of them were awarded plaques honouring their contributions.
Bista was awarded an additional Rs. 50,000 for his record breaking fourth straight taekwondo gold medal from 1999 to 2010.
Former Asian silver medalist Sabita Rajbhandari’s mother Namita Rajbhandari started the proceeding by garlanding the players.
Meanwhile, National Sports Council vice president Pitamber Timilsina announced the Cabinet’s decision to release a large sum to honour all the meallists of the 11th SAG.
As per the decision, gold, silver and bronze medal winners in individual events will win Rs. 300,000, Rs. 200,000 and Rs. 100,000 respectively, while the winners in team event will get Rs. 100,000 each (gold medal), Rs. 50,000 (silver) and Rs. 25,000 (bronze).
