KATHMANDU, MAR 19 - CPN-UML Vice Chairman Bamdev Gautam on Friday said that the UCPN (Maoist) can get the government leadership if it unconditionally comes to a political agreement. According to him, the agreement has been deferred as the Maoists have been conditional despite their willingness for it.

He said it is not impossible for the Constituent Assembly (CA) to meet the May 28 deadline to promulgate the new constitution. But expressed his fear that the “ones who have guns” may take over the state if the deadline is not extended in case the constitution drafting cannot be completed on time.

“Most of the CA tasks have been completed. If the parties can forge understanding, the constitution can be promulgated on time,” he said, “Else, the country will be pushed to a critical juncture.”

The former Deputy Prime Minister was addressing the inaugural of the third district convention of the All Nepal Farmers’ Association (ANFA) in Kathmandu. He is the central chairman of ANFA.

Gautam underscored the need to conclude the peace process even by extending the CA’s tenure in case the new constitution could not be promulgated within the set deadline.

The UML leader said his party has been moving ahead by giving top priority to the constitution drafting and the peace process. As part of which, Gautam said his party has urged the Maoists to abide by the peace agreements made so far, return all the properties seized and stop its excesses.

“We urged the Maoists in their capacity as the largest party in the CA,” said Gautam, adding that the Maoists have failed to come for unconditional agreement. He said a new Maosit-led government can be formed if the Maoists come forward unconditionally.
