KATHMANDU, MAR 19 - Finally, after a long-run debate over appointing Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) Governor, the Cabinet meeting on Thursday appointed Dr. Yubaraj Khatiwada as the new central bank chief. Khatiwada, a resident of Jhapa district, is currently serving as National Planning Commission (NPC) Vice Chairman.

Likewise, Bidyadhar Mallik has been appointed as Vice Chairman of Poverty Alleviation Trust (PAT). He is finance advisor of the President’s Office.

Earlier, the major two allies of ruling coalition—the Nepali Congress and the UML—had reached an agreement to appoint Khatiwada and and Bidyadhar Mallik in the plum posts.

However, the agreement between the major two allies to appoint Jagdish Chandra Pokhrel failed to materialise after the ruling Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Loktantrik (MJF-L) disagreed.

Meanwhile, the cabinet meeting handed over the responsibility to finalise the much-debated Machine Readable Passports (MPRs) contract to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

This has cleared the deck for awarding the contract to the Nasik-based Indian government undertaking -- Security Printing and Minting Press.
