Dhankuta fires wreak havoc
DHANKUTA, MAR 19 -
Dozens of community forests in Dhankuta district have caught wildfire, threatening many human settlements.
Some of the forests are smoldering for more than a week. During nights, dozens of forests can be seen burning from the district headquarters. The wildfire has, however, failed to draw significant attention of the district administration.
Sibhuwa Takla Community Forest of Tankhuwa VDC is in flames for the last three days. Locals’ attempt to control the wildfire has been futile.
“The fire has so far spread around 400 hectares. Valuable herbs, timber and wildlife have been destroyed,” said Bishnu Bhujel, chairman of the community forest users’ group.
Meanwhile, a wildfire at Pathivara Community Forest of Teliya VDC-3 that started one week ago has not been contained yet. Many human settlements close to the forest are at risk of catching fire.
Similarly, two community forests at the district headquarters are also burning since last week.
In some forests, fire contained earlier by locals has reignited, causing further damage.
Affected villagers said the wildfires are gaining more ground due to authorities’ inaction, lack of manpower and resources.
