KATHMANDU, MAR 18 - With a view to drawing attention of the political bigwigs to promulgate the constitution on time, a group of “new generation” Constituent Assembly (CA) members under the age of 50 submitted a memorandum with their signatures to CA Chairman Subas Nembang and chiefs of major parties.

Around 200 out of 601 lawmakers have signed on the memorandum.

The move comes amid grievances that political top guns have failed to concentrate on constitution writing process.

“The memorandum bearing signatures was submitted to concerned body and party chiefs for making a youth- friendly statute on time,” said Sunil Babu Panta, a CA member from Nepal Communist Party (Unified). “Leaders have expressed their commitments. Let’s see how they act in the coming days.”

Besides Nembang, the memorandum was submitted to UCPN (Maoist) Vice Chairman Narayan Kaji Shrestha, Nepali Congress Vice President Ram Chandra Poudel and CPN-UML Chairman Jhala Nath Khanal. Leaders have expressed their firm commitment to promulgate the statute within stipulated timeframe.

However, both the UML and Maoist leaders claimed their parties were committed to promulgation of the constitution within the stipulated timeframe.
