Maoist seek fringe parties’ support for no-confidence motion

KATHMANDU, MAR 18 -

The main opposition party UCPN (Maoist) has requested the fringe parties represented in the Constituent Assembly (CA) for their support in tabling the no-confidence motion against the incumbent government and to form a new Maoist-led national government on Thursday.

The Maoist party made such requests during a meeting with other political parties held at the Maoist Parliamentary Party office in Singhadurbar today.

The Maoists, however, said efforts are being made to forge a consensus and that dialogues and discussions with the Nepali Congress and CPN-UML will be continued.

Though the Maoists had invited all the CA parties apart from the ruling allies—UML, NC and Madhesi Janadhikar Forum-Loktantrik— only 12 parties turned up for the meeting this morning.

On the occasion, Maoist Chairman Pushpa Kamal Dahal charged that the incumbent government is the major hindrance in defusing the political standoff.

Talking briefly to reporters after the meeting, Maoist Vice Chairman Dr. Baburam Bhattarai said it would be the better  if Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal himself steps down from the government.

Alternatives would be sought if the incumbent government does not step aside for the formation of a new government, Bhattarai said.

Emerging from the meeting, Chure Bhawar Ekata Party Chairman Keshav Kumar Mainali said the party suggested the Maoists to transform themselves into a civilian party and pledge to end the political deadlock.

We urged the Maoist to facilitate the peace process by returning the seized properties, Mainali added.
