KATHMANDU, MAR 16 -

Police on Monday arrested a Pakistani woman in possession of fake Indian currency notes worth IRs. 3 million at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA).

The arrested has been identified as 65-year-old Mariyam who was carrying a Pakistani passport.

Mariyam was arrested during regular security checks after her arrival at TIA in a Pakistan Airlines flight.

The flight from Karachi landed in Kathmandu at 4 p.m. Security personnel posted at TIA recovered fakes notes in the denomination of IRs. 500 amounting to IRs. 2,500000, and IRs. 1000 amounting to IRs. 500,000.

The Pakistani woman had concealed the counterfeit notes in her baggage which was full of clothes.

Investigators said the woman was assigned as a carrier to smuggle the fake notes that almost resembled the genuine ones.

A preliminary investigation indicated involvement of a big racket in the circulation of counterfeit currency in Nepal.

Investigators said, following Mariyam’s arrest, they have found important clues about other possible members of the racket. A special team has been mobilised to nab them.

Investigators have also brought two police constables posted at TIA—Jitendra Giri and Sagir Miya—under investigation suspecting their involvement in the racket and are interrogating them. Giri and Miya, said police, were not keen on checking the woman and were a bit lenient on her.
