Bus falls into dry riverbed in India, killing 26
INDIA, MAR 15 -
Police say a bus has fallen from a bridge into a dry riverbed in northwestern India, killing at least 26 students and teachers on board.
Police official Vikas Kumar says the accident occurred early Monday in Sawai Madhopur district, nearly 115 miles (185 kilometers) west of Jaipur, the capital of Rajasthan state
Kumar said the driver apparently lost control of the vehicle and it smashed the bridge railing and plunged into the riverbed.
The victims were from a teachers' training institute and were returning to Khanpur in Rajasthan state after visiting the Hindu pilgrimage center of Haridwar in Uttarakhand state.
Accidents occur frequently on roads in India and are often blamed on reckless driving, aging vehicles and overloading.
