KATHAMNDU, MAR 14 - CPN-UML Chairman Jhalanath Khanal has asked the party to respect past pacts regarding the integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants.

Speaking at a press meet organised to make public the decision of the party’s central committee meeting at Balkhu, Khanal said, “As our party has already agreed on the integration of Maoist fighters, any debate on the issue now is untimely. They will be integrated as per the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and the decisions of the Special Committee” Responding to a query about the party’s take on the Army chief’s recent remark against bulk integration of Maoist combatants into Nepal Army, Khanal simply said the issue calls for consensus. “Consensus is essential among the parties before taking any decision in this matter.”

Referring to the reluctance of the United Nations Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) to disclose current status of the Maoist fighters, Khanal asked the UN body not to be so ‘arrogant’. “UNMIN should provide information as demanded by the government as it is simply a matter of mutual understanding.” Khanal also claimed that the intra-party rift in the UML was resolved. Interestingly, KP Sharma Oli and his supporters, who are supposed to be Khanal’s rival were absent at the meet.
