Tamsaling shut down Dhading, Chitwan and Makwanpur districts; Protestors torch 1100 copies of Kantipur

CHITWAN, MAR 14 -

Notwithstanding its commitment to abstain from enforcing general shutdown for the celebrations of Nepal Tourism Year 2011, the Tamsaling Nepal Rastriya Dal (TNRD) called for a general shutdown in Dhading, Chitwan and Makwanpur districts on Sunday.

TNRD activists torched around 1100 copies of Kantipur Daily in Mahadevbeshi of Thakre VDC, Dhading for defying the strike. The strikers stopped the jeep (Ba 6 Cha 5048) carrying the newspapers while it was on its way to Dhadingbeshi from the capital in the wee hours of Sunday morning and set fire on the papers, Police said.

The TNRD has called for the shutdown in three districts accusing that the State Restructure committee of the Constituent Assembly (CA) of trying to disintegrate the Tamsaling State.

Shops in the major market areas of Chitwan including Narayanghat, Bharatpur and Tadi have been shuttered from early today due to the strike.

The security has been beefed along the highway in view of the strike called by TNRD, Chief District Officer (CDO) of Chitwan, Maheshwor Neupane said.

However, few vehicles have been plying the inner roads. The banda-enforcers have said they will not obstruct the vehicles belonging to press, ambulances and diplomatic missions.

Police use force to resume highway

Mahadevbeshi area in Thakre VDC along the Prithvi highway remained tense earlier today after the police tried to clear the highway.

Police fired two shots into the air and two teargas shells to disperse the agitating mob. The agitators vandalised few vehicles including (Ba 2 Cha 1938), (Ba 7 Cha 3494), (Ba 2 Cha 1591) for defying the strike.

A huge number of security personnel have been deployed in Mahadevbeshi area and the police escorted a couple of vehicles to their destinations.

Meanwhile, TNRD has claimed that the police has taken 7 of its cadres into custody.
