DANG, MAR 14 - Normal life in the Tarai region including Dang district have been crippled on Sunday due to the general strike called by eight different Tharu organisations including Tharu Kalyankari Sabha (TKS) demanding multi-province in the Tarai region.

They called a shutdown in 22 Tarai districts to protest against declaring Tarai, popularly known as Mahdesh, as a single state.

Transportation has come to a halt, market places, industries and educational institutions have been shut.

TKS central member Metmani Chaudhari said they have, however, decided to allow the conduction of district level examinations of grade eight.

Butwal area completely affected

Meanwhile, the shutdown of Tharuhat region has brought Butwal and its surrounding market places to a complete standstill.

Major highways passing through the major town of western region—the Siddhartha highway and the East-West highway—were a deserted look as all the vehicles were confined to the garage fearing the possible loss.

Entire market places, educational institution, industries, health institutions, medical and cooperatives have been closed due to the banda.

Saying that the Constituent Assembly (CA) became absolutely insensitive to the demands for multi-provinces in the Tarai region by various ethnic groups, Dalits, Muslim, and other marginalised community, the TKS has decided to intensify the general strike.

They have also warned that the government will have to take responsibility for the consequences that might occur due to the police's suppression of their peaceful strike.
