Party fronts 'coercing' Doti folks for donation

DOTI, MAR 14 -

People from various walks of life have accused sister organisations of different political parties of pestering them with donation demands.

They say a number of groups come to their workplace unannounced and demand money in the name of organising functions, strengthening the organisations and organising conventions. The district administration's warning to the parties to stop seeking donation from all concerned has gone unheard.

"I've been receiving a number of complaints in this regard," said Chief District Officer Bhawani Prasad Parajuli, adding that some groups had approached him, too, for financial help. "I rebuked them and showed them the way out."

With the rise in the number of donation-seeking groups, the Doti Chamber of Commerce and Industry has directed the entrepreneurs and businessmen to pay only those groups that have the chamber's recommendation. The effort has proved futile, though.

"Some groups threaten to do us harm if we don't pay. We cannot just ignore them," said a shopkeeper.

From student bodies of a party to employees' unions, everyone is exploiting locals with their so-called fundraising, he said.

Meanwhile, political parties in the district claimed they had forced none to make contribution to their organisations.

"We have been taking donation only from the willing," said Narad Malasi, CPN-UML's district chairman, terming coercion alleged on party cadre for donation 'baseless'.

Chandra Dev Joshi, UCPN (Maoist)'s district joint in-charge, also denied forcing people to pay.  "We are merely requesting our well-wishers for help. No one is compelled to contribute."
