KATHMANDU, MAR 14 -

In what looks like a clarification to the questions raised over the lawmakers' value-system, UCPN (Maoist) Vice Chairman and former Finance Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai on Sunday said returned the allowances of the period during which he failed to attend the Constituent Assembly (CA) meetings.

The announcement comes in the wake of media reports that the CA members have been pocketing the financial benefit even of the meetings in which they did not take part.

Issuing a press statement today, Dr Bhattarai said the news reports that accused the lawmakers of pocketing the allowances by abstaining from the meetings have drawn his serious attention.

"I have returned the allowances of the 20 days during which I could not attend the CA meeting," said Dr Bhattarai.

The former finance minister also urged the CA Secretariat to provide the allowances to him in the future by deducting the amount of absent days.

Dr. Bhattarai's personal secretary Bishwodeep Pandey deposited Rs. 4000 back to the CA Secretariat account today itself.

Each of the 601 CA members receives Rs. 200 as allowance and Rs 150 as travelling expenses for attending the CA meeting.
