Pandey spins Nepal into semis

KATHAMNDU, MAR 12 - Nischal Pandey’s scintillating form continued as Nepal won their third consecutive match to enter the semifinal of the ACC U-16 Elite Cup on Thursday.

Pandey once again contributed with both bat and ball to give Nepal an 85-run victory over Bahrain at Army Cricket Ground. Pandey scored 74 runs and bagged five wickets to clinch his third man-of-the-match award in as many games.

Nepal, who opted to bat first, set up a huge target of 207 after Pandey shared an opening stand of 86 runs with Sharad Khadka. Pandey hit 12 fours in his 62-balls innings while Khadka’s 26 runs included four boundaries. Sushan Shrestha added 20 runs while Hari Chaulagain contributed with a quick-fire 27 not out off 20 balls including three boundaries. Lalith Lal and Nikhil Olar grabbed two wickets each for Bahrain as Nepal lost seven wickets in the process.

In reply to Nepal’s 206, Bahrain were restricted to 121 runs at the loss of nine wickets. Bahrain were struggling right from the start as two of their batsmen were sent back to pavilion by Hari Chaulagain in the second and third ball of the innings without troubling the scorers. Mohammad Faiz Jasnaik (17 runs) and Mohammad Fayyaz (26 runs) together put up 54 runs give the visitors some hope but no other batsman could withstand Nepali spinners for any length of time. 

Aditya Sarkar contributed with 24 runs while Marwan Shmsalalqamarp added 18 before both were sent back by Nischal Pandey who finished with figures of 5-28 from eight overs. Rajiv Shah and Sharad Khadka bagged one wicket each.

In the day’s other matches, Malaysia beat Saudi Arabia by six wickets while Singapore drubbed Thailand by 175 runs.

In the match played at Pulchowk Engineering Ground, Malaysia chased the target of 126 inside 24 overs losing four wickets. Ahmad Tajudin scored 45 runs including six boundaries while Syahadat Ramli contributed with 29 runs. Mohammad Usman contributed 37 runs for Saudi Arabia.

Likewise, chasing the unassailable target of 247, Thailand were bundled out for 71 runs in 31.4 overs. Vikas Rajgopal scored

61 runs while Iishan Sekhar and Mohit Kulkarni added 46 and 44 runs respectively for Singapore.
