NHRC concerned over Bardia killings
KATHMANDU, MAR 12 - The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed serious concern over the Wednesday killing of three persons--two women and a 12-year-old girl--in an incident of firing at Banspani of the Bardia National Park.
Issuing a press release on Friday, the national rights watchdog said it has sent a team from its regional office in Nepalgunj to the incident site for investigation.
The release said it has written to the Prime Minister, Cabinet Office, Nepal Army and the Home Ministry to look into the case, urging to conduct a fair investigation into the killing and bring the perpetrators to book.
The three were killed when NA soldiers from Jwaladatta Battalion opened fire on them. The victims are identified as Chandrakala BK, 12, Amrita BK, 33, and Devisara BK, 35 from Haripur, Surkhet. The NA has claimed that the dead were poachers.
“NHRC urges the government to promptly investigate the incident, bring out the truth and punish the culprits,” said NHRC in a statement on Friday. The rights body said it has also asked the government and the Nepal Army to provide detailed information about the incident.
